I find myself in Norwalk, Connecticut for the summer with few plans and even fewer funds to spend on filling the hours. My hope is to entrain myself for two and half months for as cheaply as possible. One of the things I am doing to fill my time is to share with you my creative cost saving ways of spending the time as I explore and craft my way through the summer.
Why Norwalk, CT?
My husband took an internship with an acoustic consulting firm in town for the summer, he does sound stuff. Since I took a job away from home this past year I promised him where ever he got an internship I would follow, so here I am. Normally in the summer we work summer theatre which tends to be a fairly demanding schedule so it is very odd to find myself with all this free time. We hoped we would have enough advanced notice on our summer plans that I could put together some work. But instead they were very last minute and while I have been sending out the random application when I can, I am realizing I will be entertaining myself Monday through Friday from 9 to 5.
What to do?
While I will read some books and catch up on some movie watching, I like to feel I have achieved something in my day and would like to do that while cutting into my savings as little as possible. i figure the best way to entertain myself is exploring the town as much as possible and playing around in all the crafting projects I have wanted to do but never had the time, because I have time at the moment.
Why so cost conscious?
A little tip about Norwalk, or Connecticut in general, if you didn't know is it is expensive. Apparently being an hour away from Manhattan comes with a price, a big one. So despite the great boutique shopping and the ample opportunities to hire a boat I am going to get to know the free attributes of Norwalk as best I can.
Luckily my crafting should be fairly cheap, I am a Costume Designer (and therefore often stitcher) which means I have a great collection of sewing and art supplies. One thing about my ample diversity of supplies, only a fraction of it is here with me. When you are packing a four door sedan with everything you need to live for three months, pads of paper and yards of fabric often get ditched for more important things such as towels and clothes. If there wasn't room to bring it up here it means there won't be room to take it back. So I am trying to do all my crafting with what I brought with me or what I can re-imagine here, no since buying something I already have at home once I get back there.
The point?
Here is to my creation of an enjoyable summer while spending little and acquiring even less. Here is to a summer of cheapEntertainment.
