New York Quickie

The intention is to post once a day Monday through Friday, but my plans were foiled this past Friday by Daniel coming home from work at 1 o'clock with the idea we should make a run to NYC.  While I made lunch, Daniel started trudging through travel hacking the PriceLine's.com "Name Your Own Price Option." After spending the better part of an hour working the formulas he booked us a room and half an hour after later we were on the train to New York.

The train station is two blocks from our apartment and we can ride to the city for about $10 each person each way. Though I believe I will invest in a 10 ride pass for a small discount.

We got into New York around 4 o'clock and checked into our room at the Windgate.  We have stayed in several hotels in New York and this was both the nicest and the cheapest, at $80 (plus taxes), we have stayed in.

Hotel Room
If this picture and that price does not impress you I am guessing you have not stayed in New York too many times.

Once in we ran down to tkts to get tickets for a show.  If you are not familar tkts is both in Times Sq. where you can get Broadway tickets for that night's shows at a 40% to 60% discount.  The prices are still high but most of broadway shows are there so it is really convient.  After standing in the line for 20 ish minutes we realized there is an express line if you just want to see a play.  Most people using tkts are tourist planning on seeing Musicals.  We were able to get tickets to The Motherf**ker with a Hat at a 50% discount though that is still $70 dollars a ticket.

We had a little time to kill before the show so we bummed around Mood fabric for a little bit.  Yes Mood from "Project Runway" and it is even bigger than it looks on the show.  As a costume designer I love fabric stores, I can spend hours in a small chain like Handcock or Joanne fabrics so Mood is just a ball for me.  And Daniel did need some buttons for a jacket so it is not just wondering.

We tried to go to John's Pizza on 44th Street but it was packed so we had to settle for salads from a Panera style chain.

The Motherf**cker with the Hat was pretty good.  Chris Rock is in it, though not the leading man, he is good.  I am not sure I would say he was a great actor but it felt like the part was written for him, so the role and him were a perfect match.  While being heartbreaking the show was really funny.

Exactly what it says
Oh and I also saw Craig Robinson, Darryl from The Office, at the theatre bar.  But I competely chicken out in saying hello.  Mainly because I couldn't remember his name and I thought that would be super lame.
Everyone loves the Theatre
After the show Daniel and I caught the subway to our favorite dessert place in New York, Cafe Lola.

The inside would seem familiar to a lot of you because it is where Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks were suppose to meet up in You've Got Mail, though it is way smaller than it looks.  The place is great with something in the way of over 50 different cake, pies, tarts and the such.  You do sit on top of people and it is loud but the desserts are amazing and it is open till 4 in the morning.

I am not huge on Times Sq. it is always way too crowded and full of chain stores I can see in any town, thought the Toys R Us is something else.  I did include some Times Sq. pictures for those of you who want them.

One thing I love about New York is how random it can be.  This girl was feeding the birds by roller skates and you will notice the shopping cart full of bird seed to the right of her.  We noticed other mega dumps of bird seed else where in the area.

Saturday morning we walked up to Rockafeller center and stopped by one of my favorite chocolate shops, La Maison Du Chocolate.  We first found this shop on our honeymoon in Paris which was a funny story and always makes me laugh when we get chocolat here.

Pretensions Chocolate
My haul.
We only got two pieces which still cost $4 bucks... nope worth it.

For lunch we succeeded this time in eating at John's Pizza for some true New York slices.  And then caught a matinee of Memphis.  We did better on the price this time as we student rushed the show and where able  to get tickets for $25 a piece.  We ended up in box seats, awhile this sounds super sexy they are often kinda crummy seats, but we were really close and cheap tickets

The show was amazing.  Lots of big dance numbers and the story was really compelling.  Daniel described it as Hairspray when shit got real.  If you have not seen Hairspray think white boy tries to single handily integrate the music scene of 1960's Memphis, Tennessee.  I competeley understand why it got the Tony last year.

We killed a little time in a broadway crap store before the show and could not stop laughing when we say these buttons for "Ticket person," Makeup Person,"Designer Person" "Sound Person."

We tried to go to the MOMA, The Museum of Modern Art, after the show but it was closing in an half hour so I guess I will have to go back sometime.  We grabbed a gyro, Daniel's favorite, from a street cart and caught the train back with enough time to make dinner.

I can't wait to go back maybe even sometime this week...
